No More Natural Teeth: Deciding Between Implants and Dentures

3 Discreet Alternatives To Metal Braces

by Jeremiah Barnett

Straightening your teeth does not have to be embarrassing. For many orthodontic patients, metal braces draw unwanted attention to the mouth. After all, the metal contrasts sharply with the natural white color of the teeth. Nevertheless, some teeth-straightening appliances can be quite discreet. Here a few orthodontic options that are less noticeable than conventional metal braces:

Plastic Clear Aligners

Plastic clear aligners are ridged plastic appliances that help shift the teeth into a straighter alignment. The aligners are transparent, so they are much more discreet than metal brackets. In addition, the aligners can be removed whenever you need to brush your teeth or eat.

The clear plastic aligners are worn in a manner similar to a mouth guard. They straighten the teeth progressively. Each treatment plan consists of multiple sets of clear aligners. Each set of aligners is worn for a couple of weeks. Then, the next set of aligners takes its place. The progression to a new set of aligners continues repeatedly until the teeth are aligned properly.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are also more discreet than traditional braces. The brackets of lingual braces are constructed of metal, but their positioning in the mouth makes them less noticeable. Instead of resting on the front surface of the teeth, where they would be easily seen, lingual braces are secured to the back of the teeth. Since they are located next to the tongue, the braces are aptly referred to as lingual.

Lingual braces offer other benefits in addition to discretion. The placement on the back of the teeth prevents the braces from hindering the natural movement of the lips. As a result, wind instruments can be played easily, and blows to the mouth during sports are less likely to result in torn lips.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces have tooth-colored brackets that are made of ceramic instead of metal. They are still applied to the front surface of the teeth, but their color makes them less noticeable. The braces are not easily discerned against white tooth enamel. Nevertheless, they straighten the teeth as quickly and easily as metal braces.

To ensure that the ceramic braces are as discreet as possible, clear elastic bands can be used to secure the archwire to the ceramic brackets.

To learn about more discreet options available to straighten your teeth, schedule an appointment with a company like Braces Inc. Although not every orthodontic appliance is suitable for all dental misalignments, an orthodontist can assess your teeth and prescribe a suitable option to match your needs.
